Leadership Decatur County: Ag Session Recap

Yesterday’s Ag Session highlighted how vital the agriculture industry is to Decatur County. Our Leadership Decatur County participants had the opportunity to visit local agricultural facilities, learn directly from industry leaders, and gain hands-on experience that deepened their understanding of how essential agriculture is to our community. Special thanks to First National Bank for sponsoring the program, Anna Kinchen from Southwest Georgia Farm Credit for planning the day, and to everyone who contributed to making this day happen.

The day began with tours of Decatur Gin and Harrell Ag, where we got an inside look at the operations proudly run here in Decatur County. A big thank you to Southwest Georgia Farm Credit for hosting lunch, where President Paxton Poitevent shared valuable insights into their operations and emphasized that their customers are truly at the heart of everything they do. We also heard from Allison Godwin, Farm Credit's HR Manager, who shared information about the career opportunities the company offers.

We wrapped up the day at the Cloud Livestock Center and learned about the work being done by the UGA Extension Office, thanks to a presentation from Lindsay Hayes. Participants engaged in an Ag Panel Discussion with local farmers, exploring the pros and cons of farming firsthand. We also heard from Dr. Paul Johnson, owner of Providence Dairy, Inc. in Climax, who reminded us of the importance of agricultural commodities and the daily challenges farmers face. To conclude the session, we had the opportunity to learn from 4-H students about the skills required to properly show livestock. Participants even got some hands-on experience, with Dr. Bo Bailey winning and taking home the bragging rights!

As Hurricane Helene approaches, it’s more important than ever to keep our local farmers in your thoughts and prayers. Agriculture is not only Decatur County’s largest industry, but also the heart and soul of our community.
